A 22-centimeter-long spike comes from the 1622 galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. The hand forged, wrought-iron fastener is of the typical style from the 1622 ships – a square shank that tapers to a point, with a “rose head” formed by flattening the larger end. Thousands of spikes and other fasteners would have been required to construct a galleon.
