Buen Jesús (1622)
circa 1622
An earthenware plate, or plato, comes from the wreck of the patache Buen Jesus, a Spanish merchant ship sunk in the deep water between the Florida Keys and Cuba in 1622. The deep-dished plate is just under 20 centimeters in diameter, 5 centimeters tall, and covered with a creamy tin-based enamel. This would have been a low-cost, common-grade dish, affordable to just about anyone on the ship.
